WHAT ON EARTH IS A HABERDASHER?
Since 1962, the building at 475 Main Street in Bennington had been the home of Shaffe’s Men Shop, the home of the longest continiously operational business in Vermont. Joseph Yanishefsky started the business as a tailor shop, but after a while, found that it was hard to make a living just doing alterations, and started selling men’s readyware instead. The business was purchased in 1972, but Joseph’s son, David Shaffe. In 2023, David and his brother Sam, closed the business for good, and the building was sold to the current owner’s, the Macksey Family.
The name “Haberdasher” is an American/British term for a retailer in men’s clothing, paying homage to the building’s long rich history.
Haberdasher’s selections are focused on all the things we’re most obsessed with from the local area (Hudson Valley, Berkshires & Vermont). We love to sus out the best makers and celebrate them. We have a wide assortment of wines (natural & conventional), craft beers that are a little harder to find, a cheese counter featureing all that Vermont has to offer, and hard to find grocery items. Occationally, we’ll have some antique barware lurking around. We only offer what we love, so stop by and take a peak.
